'Naked Lunch' by William S Burroughs (1959)
It makes little sense, but that's part of its appeal. William S Burroughs literally rewrote the modern novel with his cut-up process, whereby he rearranged his writings into vignettes that could be read in any order, loosely connected by themes of madness, violence and addiction.
Naturally, it's not the easiest of reads but a deeper analysis makes for some interesting comparisons with Burroughs' real life events including his drug addictions and shooting his female companion in the head during a drunken game of William Tell.
