Voters picked their favourite from a shortlist compiled by a panel of experts all well versed in what makes a British seaside resort stand out. Panelists included David Else from Lonely Planet, Mail on Sunday travel editor Frank Barrettt, wildlife expert and TV presenter Bill Oddie, British entertainer Lionel Blair and the chairman of the British Surfing Association Kevin Cook.

Margate was another popular choice earning a place as joint third.
