The Color Purple is a critically acclaimed novel, written by Alice Walker, which received both a Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and a National Book Award. The story focusses on female black life during the 1930's in the Southern United States.
The novel itself has been the frequent target of censors and appears at number 17 in the list of Most Frequently Challenged Books of 2000-2009 due to sometimes explicit and violent content.
