Opening an umbrella indoors
As early as the 11th century BC in the East, umbrellas were used not only for protection against the rain and sun but also to ward off any harmful spirits - and opening one indoors would insult the sun god.
Another theory is that goblins were believed to hide inside brollies and could infest a house if freed indoors.
