Cornwall Council Tech Upgrade
Council to invest £20 million in Digital Cornwall project.
09:41 26 June 2018
Cornwall Council has announced that it will spend £20 million to upgrade its computer systems over three years. Employees, who are currently wasting hundreds of working hours as they wait 20 minutes each time they log into their computer every day, say that the project is long overdue.
One staff member said: “As we were using such old equipment, log in times for staff in the mornings was 20 minutes a day on average. That is completely unacceptable and comes from significant under investment in IT.”
The upgrade of the council’s computer equipment and systems will also make it easier for the public to contact the council and access services. In addition, Mark Read, service director for customer access and digital, said that the project would help the council generate savings of £2.3million.
The council is also looking at upgrading its website to integrate all services so residents can easily access them using only one log in.
Mr Read said: “£20m is a lot of money but a lot of that is spent on getting us up to where we need to be. We do need to show how we are going to make the best use of that investment.”
