Apple Hint At Another Dropped Chipset

Apple may be moving away from Intel’s 5G modems in future iPhones.

Recent reports suggest that Apple may be dropping yet another Intel chipset in its future iPhone handset. Ctech reports that there are internal documents showing that Apple has already notified Intel that it will not be using its 5G modems in its 2020 product lineup. As a result, the report added, Intel has dissolved the team that develops the product, as Apple was its primary customer for the combined 5G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip.

 

Apple, which heavily relied on Qualcomm chips, has recently turned to Intel for its chipsets. Intel is expected to supply the bulk of the chips for this year’s iPhones but it is believed that Apple will still rely on Qualcomm for part of its supply.

 

Earlier this year, it has also been reported that Apple would stop using Intel processors in its Mac computers and would instead rely on its own inhouse processing units (CPUs).

 

Apple was using chips designed by IBM and Motorola for its computer range before it switched to Intel in 2005.
