Zayn Malik, member of the musical group One Direction, has deleted his Twitter account after he posted two messages explaining why he would be leaving the Twittersphere.
In his official tweet, he said: “The reason I don’t tweet as much as I use to is because I’m sick of all the useless opinions and hate that I get daily. Goodbye Twitter.”
He did give fans a way to contact him through Twitter. He said that fans can tweet him through the official One Direction account.
Malik, who hails from Bradford in West Yorkshire, is not the first pop celebrity to bid the micro-blogging website goodbye. In April, singer Nicki Minaj also left the site after having a row with a fan; Minaj, however, returned to the site over a week later.
Helen Skelton, host of Blue Peter, also deleted her account just earlier this month. According to her, she could not cope with the negative comments she receives on the website.
Actress Demi Lovato has also refrained from tweeting since 2009 although her account remains active. Miley Cyrus also deleted her account once in 2009 but has since returned to the site.
Users who delete their accounts have 30 days to reactivate them. This means there’s still a chance for Zayn Malik to recover his connection with his more than 5 million Twitter followers.
