Why You Can’t Trust a Generic Phone Case
Why Generic Phone Cases are Risky
00:27 01 November 2023
Have you ever seen a cool looking phone case that was designed specifically for your phone, and wondered if it was worth buying? So many companies produce fun and unique cases for low prices, and it’s tempting to get one when it strikes your interest. Why not? Aren’t phone cases simple enough to make sure they would all be effective?
Not exactly. Most of the companies making cheap phone cases don’t even test their products to ensure they function as a protective case. At best, generic phone cases like these are really only decorative. That’s not necessarily a bad thing if you’re careful with your phone, but accidents happen when you least expect, and that’s a big chance to take.
Generic phone cases are risky
If you’re not comfortable with the idea of having an unreliable, untested phone case, don’t buy generic. Consider better options, like the SUPCASE Unicorn Beetle PRO. This particular case has been thoroughly tested in every way possible and passed every test with flying colors. It’s been shown to protect an iPhone from two 50-foot drops, being run over, hit with lawn mower blades, and tossed out a car window at 50 mph. That’s pretty impressive for a phone case!
Generic cases just don’t live up to these tests. One guy did a drop test with a $50 phone case, which isn’t cheap, but his iPhone didn’t survive. He had planned to do the same test with a $1 case, but decided it wasn’t necessary since the more expensive one failed.
It’s scary thinking about how many cases out there can’t pass a simple drop test. Granted, most of these tests are done from way up high, but if the purpose of a case is to protect your phone, it should live up to that when dropped from what would be considered a reasonable height. It’s not every day that people hang their phones out of a second-story window, but it does happen. People have even accidentally tossed their smartphone out of an open window. You never know what’s going to happen.
What makes a good smartphone case?
When you go to buy a new case for your phone, there are several things you need to look for to determine if it’s worth your money. The most important factor is the ability for a case to withstand impact. If this aspect of your case fails, you’ll have to either get your phone fixed or replace the device completely.
Aesthetics are nice, but let’s be real – if you’re going to pay $1,000 for a smartphone, protecting it with a functional case should be your priority. We’re not talking about the cheap $35 flip phones from the early 2000s here. We’re talking about expensive iPhones and Samsung smartphones that cost the equivalent of a high-quality laptop computer.
So, what should you look for in a smartphone case?
- Thickness. Thicker cases offer better protection, but you might not want to bulk up your phone. If you have a thin phone, like the Samsung Galaxy S23, you’ve got more room to use a thicker case. However, if you use the S23 Ultra, a thick case will turn your phone into a tank. That’s not a bad thing, but it is something to consider.
- Dust plugs. This is something many people overlook and regret later. If you want the best protection, get a case that has dust plugs for your ports. This way, you can mow the lawn, go to the beach, and work with wood without worrying about getting debris in your ports. Just one tiny bit of sand can make your charging port stop working.
- Shatter protection. Most smartphones meet their demise by shattering. You need strong shatter protection to avoid this fate. The best defense is a separate tempered glass screen protector.
- Brand reputation. If a smartphone case is good, it’s going to have a positive reputation. It doesn’t take long for customers to find out the hard way when a case doesn’t protect their device. When choosing a case, look for brands that have proven themselves over time to make high-quality cases that withstand normal accidents.
You can’t protect your phone completely
Although there are many high-quality, protective cases on the market, there are times when these cases can’t protect your phone. Gravity has an interesting way of forcing phones to fall at specific angles or smash into objects in a way that will make them shatter. Sometimes, accidents are unavoidable. However, a good case will decrease the chances of destruction. For the best protection, skip the generic cases and get yourself a proven, tested, durable smartphone case.
