What Is Google WiFi?
Say goodbye to Wi-Fi dead spots in your home with Google WiFi.
18:01 03 April 2017
Google WiFi, which has been launched in the US last year, is coming to the UK on 6 April. These mesh-networked cylinders work as a router but they are more effective in ensuring better wireless coverage across your home. One of them connects to your DSL or cable modem as normal while the others are connected wirelessly to the first unit and are strategically placed elsewhere around your home.
A single Google WiFi unit costs £129 while a two-pack of Google’s devices is for £229. Three of these Wi-Fi cylinders are able to cover up to 4,500 square feet and are easy to set up via free Android or iOS app that configures the network for you. The same app offers various options including prioritising bandwidth for a specific device or pausing Wi-Fi coverage. A recent test has found that Google WiFi boasted impressive performance levels when it came to real-world speeds.
Aside from their reliability and stellar performance, the cylindrical devices are aesthetically pleasing, smart-looking and unobtrusive. However, when compared to their prices in the United States, they are much more expensive in the United Kingdom. A three-pack sells for $299 in the US while a two-pack costs £299 in the UK.
