Warwickshire County Council is migrating its staff members from Google to Microsoft productivity suite to save on costs.
Rob Musekiwa, the council’s digital lead, confirmed that the council will be using Office 365 productivity tools, particularly Teams for video conferencing and will move from McAfee Antivirus to Windows Defender.
The move will help the council from spending money on unnecessary tools, which also undermine its own efficiency. It came after a scoring assessment of the two suites revealed that Microsoft was rated higher on issues such as document security and integration capabilities, as well as having more overall features.
The council has already purchased the required licences and aims to migrate most staff members within the next three months.
“The key difference for me is the pace we have been able to move at,” he said. “Some organisations take two or three years, but that is too long and is an opportunity cost. The faster you do it the earlier you get the benefits.”
“It’s better if organisational and technology change go hand in hand as long as it is business led,” he said. “Part of the problem was that at Warwickshire it was previously technology led and it lacked a cohesive approach.”
