What does 2018 hold for the telecoms world?

2017 was the year when the first ever £1,000 mobile phone was launched across the world. 2017 is also the year when the telecom world started investing heavily in infrastructure to address glaring holes in decent broadband coverage and mobile data. 2017 also marked the dawn of artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT).

 

So, what does 2018 hold for the telecoms worlds? In terms of mobile phones, key players in the industry are launching new-generation mobile devices with never-before-seen features. Apple is now looking at developing a bendy iPhone. The company has filed for a US Patent application for a phone with “a flexible portion that allows the device to be folded.” Samsung is rumoured to be heading the same path. Microsoft, on the other hand, has been recently granted a patent for a tablet device that folded up to become a phone.

 

However, it seems that consumers’ main demand is a longer battery life. Many are looking for a mobile device that would run on a single charge for a week. Samsung may provide a solution as it is now researching graphene batteries. 

 

Meanwhile, in the world of landline, SIP and VoIP will continue to advance to replace ISDN. However, analogue will still be here until 2025. This provides businesses plenty of time to make the switch.
