A VoIP gateway, which is also referred to as PSTN gateway, is a device used to convert telephony traffic into IP for transmission over a data network. It lets you make and receive calls on the regular telephony network as well as via VoIP (Voice over internet Protocol) depending on your business needs. The former is usually ideal if you require a higher call quality and availability. The latter, on the other hand, works best for a company with multiple offices as it reduces the cost of interoffice calling.

 

There are two types of VoIP gateways: analog and digital units. Analog units connect to regular analog phone lines to the gateway and are available for between 2 and 24 lines. Digital units, on the other hand, let you connect digital lines.

 

The cost of analog VoIP gateways can be as little as $200 and they are available online.
