Ulverston CCTV Plans
Councillors welcome plans to install CCTV cameras across Ulverston.
22:40 12 June 2019
Ulverston Town Councillor Dave Webster is heading plans to install CCTV cameras on Market Square, above the Kings Arms Hotel on King’s Street and above Helen Gee Hairdressing on Market Street. Each camera will cost the council £6,000.
Cllr Webster said the initiative would be a "positive step towards crime prevention."
He added: "A lot of small villages and towns have been offered CCTV services which will be monitored by the police at no cost.
"This way, police are able to keep an eye on situations within the town and hopefully deter criminals.
"Myself and some councillors went to police headquarters and decided on suitable locations for the CCTV cameras to be installed.
"I think it will be a positive step towards crime prevention whilst comforting residents that if anything occurred, it would be seen."
Business owners and residents have been calling for the installation of CCTV cameras in Ulverston. In 2014, Cumbria’s Police and Crime Commissioner unit launched a £1 million initiative, which saw the installation of 54 cameras across Cumbria. While Kendal received seven new cameras, no CCTV provisions were granted for Ulverston.
