'Coronation Street' mechanic Tyrone Dobbs is left overjoyed after learning he is to be a dad - but is soon left heartbroken after he discovers girlfriend Maria has made a mistake.

The hapless grease monkey, played by Alan Halsall, is delighted when the pretty hairdresser tells him she is expecting the couple's first child.

Maria, played by Samia Smith, tells Tyrone to keep the happy news quiet until she is positive she is pregnant, but the thrilled mechanic can't keep his promise and tells everyone he knows on the street he is going to be a dad.

Viewers will even see Tyrone shop around for a new family car.

But while Tyrone is busy planning for life with a baby, Maria begins to have second thoughts about the pregnancy and starts to dread the prospect of raising a child at such a young age while living in a bed-sit with him.

The stunning hairdresser is ecstatic when she discovers her period is late and she is not pregnant, but Tyrone will be left reeling and paranoid Maria is going to leave him for someone better.

A Street insider told Britain's Daily Star newspaper: "Tyrone was so thrilled at the prospect of becoming a father. Then he goes from being completely over the moon to feeling completely wretched.

"Meanwhile, Maria has got the biggest smile on her face. She's so relived she's still got her single girl's life ahead of her."
