Torfaen's county council has launched a mobile app designed to help the most vulnerable residents connect with volunteers who can help them during the coronavirus crisis. Residents who signed up for the Torfaen Community Support App will be able to make requests to get volunteers to help them collect their medication and shop for food, among others. The scheme aims to help those who are most vulnerable due to age or underlying health conditions and have to remain in isolation for 12 weeks.
The app, which was developed by Syncsort, also offers chat support to help counter isolation and loneliness. It is managed by the council's newly established community support hub to ensure those who are genuinely in need of help are registered, such as those who are unable to rely on family, friends or community support during the nationwide lockdown.
Council leader, Councillor Anthony Hunt, said: "As a council, we wanted to develop something innovative that makes it as quick and easy as possible for the community to work alongside us to support our most vulnerable residents, particularly in a time of great need.
"The app does just that and we hope that residents who are seeking support are encouraged to sign up to receive a swift and supportive response."
