Stockton CCTV network, which is comprised of 173 cameras that are monitored 24 hours a day all year long, has helped the council make 588 arrests in one single year. The network was also used to log 3,437 incidents, which have been passed on to police and other strategic partners as intelligence and information for later action.
Figures were included in a report submitted to Stockton Council’s Crime and Disorder Select Committee. The report also highlights that the British public is very comfortable with CCTV cameras around the area and that the majority do not see it as invasion to their privacy.
Another research into the public perception of CCTV in the UK reveals that 80per cent of those surveyed said that they don’t receive enough information about CCTV and 76per cent thought the primary purpose of the service should be to improve their safety and security.
