The goal is to counter threat of terrorism and other types of crime.
Guidance includes improving lighting, eliminating areas of concealment and choosing the best locations of street furniture as well as CCTV cameras.
In a document, it states: “Taking proportionate security measures should be integral to the planning and delivery of new developments and substantive retrofits.
“Crime includes terrorism, and good counter terrorism protective security is also good crime prevention. “Having effective security measures in place will contribute to wider public safety and confidence.”
The DfT added that councils should work together with police, security services and transport operators to ensure that public spaces adjacent to the station do not provide an attractive terrorist target.
A spokesman for South Tyneside Council had confirmed that the council, “alongside our partners Muse and Nexus, are currently reviewing security guidance issued by the Department for Transport in relation to the forthcoming transport interchange.”
The council underwent what it describes as a “resilience workshop” before the first phase of the three-stage £100milion South Shield 365 development started.
