Karthika S., Anbu Selvan and Edson Frainler, students of DMI College of Engineering, Chennai, have developed a smart mirror. The Smart Mirror Ambient Control (SMAC) can revolutionise the way you “see” yourself.
“Since so many objects around us are ‘smart’, we thought why not have a smart mirror?” says Karthika. “We usually try to squeeze in as many activities as we can, in our tight schedule. To manage things efficiently, we have to multitask. For example, I have seen my father watching TV while shaving,” she explains. “This is where the smart mirror comes in.”
“Though it looks like a mirror, it can do much more. If you want to tie a bow and don’t know how, the mirror can play a video clip which will show you the process. The best part is that while the video is playing, you will still be able to look at your reflection,” says Karthika.
Currently, the mirror recognises 30 different commands for performing different functions. It also shows various information including the date, time, map, news feeds, and traffic and weather.
“We have designed the smart mirror in such a way that, based on a person’s face structure, it can suggest different hairstyles, beards, and so on. One can also listen to music while bathing, watch videos, comics, and TV shows,” explains Edson.
