A plan drawn up by Manchester Foundation Trust and developer Bruntwood reveals plan to create a 5G-ready hospital in Wythenshawe. The plans, which will take up to 15 years of complete, will see the rebuilding and expansion of an existing hospital to include affordable housing for nurses and an 'aparthel' for patients. Backed by the local council, the plans also aim to attract world-class scientific research and training.
A part of the planning application reads: "This may include a mix of longer-term accommodation as well as shorter-term apart-hotel style units, where patients can benefit from proximity to hospital care and easier access to home care by specialist clinicians and nursing staff."
In support of the scheme, the Transport for Greater Manchester has also submitted plans for a new tram extension to the area. Details reveal that officials will have a route for the 5G-ready hospital once it is operational. Other ideas being considered are a potential M56 link road and a bus station.
The project, which is expected to create new jobs in the city, has been described by council as 'potentially significant for housing, healthcare and apprenticeships.’ It is expected to be funded by commercial deals, including the sale of part of the site to office and housing developers.
Manchester council's executive are set to discuss the plan at their next meeting.
