Smart Cities to House 50% by 2050

The UN estimates that by 2050, more than half of the world’s population will be living in smart cities or connected urban environments.

Smart cities are built upon a complex of electronic devices and software systems using Internet of Things (IoT), machine learning and artificial intelligence.

 

However, there are still many challenges that we need to overcome in building smart cities. One of them is ensuring that the whole infrastructure is connected and functioning at all times. These can be a huge challenge because devices use to run smart cities will be exposed to the elements and extreme conditions, such as flooding and snowstorms.

 

Thus, it is crucial to ensure that all sensors are weather resistant and resilient and are specifically designed to connect with the outside world. The use of hydrophobic coating could be the answer to long-term durability of essential components. These coatings can be used to cover devices both inside and out so they are protected at all times.

 

Protecting sensors and systems is one of the main priorities in countries that are building their own smart cities. Many of them are now integrating the hydrophobic coating into the production process.
