Dutch telecom provider KPN is developing the Smart Lock, which disables the mobile network on a smartphone once the user unlock their bike using the app. Designed in partnership with the Dutch Traffic Safety Association, the lock aims to promote “the safe use of smartphones in traffic.”
However, although the device will probably prevent riders from being distracted, it has potential downsides. For one, navigation won’t work unless the maps are saved offline. Riders will also not be able to use Spotify or Apple Music and won’t be able to unlock their bike if the phone dies.
KPN says the Smart Lock is currently in closed pilot and that the addition of emergency button is being considered. However, some suggest that instead of disabling the entire mobile network, the lock can instead disable just calling and texting apps.
KPN says the Smart Lock will be available for €100 when development is complete.
