Scotland IoT Network
Scotland gets most advanced UK Internet of Things network.
11:21 24 February 2019
IOT Scotland, a £6million wide area wireless sensor network, has been claimed to be the UK’s most advanced Internet of Things network. Using 500 Long Range (LoRa) wireless gateways situated all over Scotland, the network is set to change the way businesses work by allowing them to gather and distribute data without using a WiFi network. This will empower businesses to monitor and control the status, efficiency, and productivity of their assets and equipment as well as improve production and schedule preventative maintenance services.
Glasgow-based intelligent networking and integrated security solutions provider Boston Networks will install 22 gateways to cover 99per cent of Glasgow, making it the most LoRa covered city in the UK.
Early adapters to sign up to the project include the Argyll and Bute Council, with early installations in Oban and Helensburgh. Other local councils and organisations are said to follow suit with full deployment by March 2021.
Cisco, which has collaborated with the University of Edinburgh over data-driven innovation and AI, has committed to support 20 startups by offering them with business development and technical support, mentoring and access to tools for resident start-ups.
