Royal Cars sets out on a mission to be the first taxi firm with CCTV in all of its cars.

Royal Cars is set to be the first taxi firm in the UK to install CCTV cameras in all of its cars. 

 

 

 

Nick Breakspear, the firm’s business development manager, has confirmed that CCTV cameras would start recording as soon as the ignition starts. However, they will not pick up any audio to protect passengers’ privacy. 

 

 

 

The firm has started installing high-end cameras into 75 of their own cars. The scheme will be eventually rolled out to all of the drivers with their own motors. 

 

 

 

Mr Breakspear said: “The CCTV camera will be put on the windscreen in the middle – like a dash-cam footage but looking in and out of the car.” 

 

 

 

“The camera will be switched on all the time and passengers can’t opt-out. Footage will be kept for a month, and it will detect the driver and passengers as well. 

 

 

 

“It will be difficult to say what the camera will be looking at, but it’s pointing straight.”

 

 

 

Describing the type of CCTV that the firm will use, Mr Breakspear said: “They will have full HD and custom sensors to see the driver and what they are doing.” 

 

 

 

“They have an eye motion detector to see if the drivers are looking at the road or if they are looking at their phones or anything. 

 

 

 

“All of this information will get reported to us straight away.” 

 

 

 

Drivers with own motors are encouraged to install CCTV into their cars. As an incentive, those with cameras will be offered more high-end work from top account holders and pick-ups from hotels first.
