Rihanna donated $1.75 million to a hospital in Barbados, which will be used to buy three pieces of medical equipment that could save or at least prolong the life of patients there.
The 24-year-old singer said that donating the money is her way of “giving back to Barbados.” She said: "I believe that this will have a huge impact on the people of Barbados. This was all done to save lives or at least extend them."
Rihanna’s move to donate is said to be in memory of her beloved grandmother who died in June after a long battle with cancer.
The hospital, which received the donation, has renamed their radiotherapy unit after her grandmother. It’s now called Clara Braithwaite Center for Oncology and Nuclear Medicine.
The singer, who is particularly close to her grandmother, has made the announcement over the weekend while visiting the hospital with her mother and grandfather.
Rihanna, whose real name is Robyn Fenty, is one of the most successful female musicians not just in US but also around the globe. Forbes magazine has named her the third highest earning woman in the music industry as she made $53 million in 2012 alone.
