Real-time Information On Traffic Conditions

Costain set to launch a scheme that uses technology so motorists on Kent roads will receive real-time information on traffic conditions.

Costain is working with the Department for Transport in a pilot scheme to improve traffic in Kent. The project involves the installation of roadside technology that will send traffic information to motorists, including road conditions, road works, temporary speed limits and time remaining before a traffic light turns.

 

Under the A2/M2 contract, trial vehicles will be fitted with on-board tech that can pick up wireless communication from roadside units using information supplied by Transport for London, Highways England and Kent County Council.

 

Mike Wilson, an executive director at Highways England, said, “[This] has the potential to improve journeys, making them safer and more reliable by providing real-time, personalised information directly to the driver.”
