The Ukrainian government's 'anti-terror operation' in Slavyansk with an aim of retaking the rebel stronghold in the area has met fatal consequences as pro-Russian rebels responded by shooting down two military helicopters killing at least two crew and wounding others.
Interior Minister Arsen Avakov confirmed that the rebel used grenade launchers and portable anti-aircraft missile launchers to bring down the aircraft.
Describing the operation as "the active phase of the anti-terrorist operation", Mr Avakov said its goals were simple - "free the hostages, lay down their arms and free administrative buildings, and restore the normal functioning of the town's administration".
A Russian news agency reported that a spokesperson for Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused Kiev of launching a “punitive operation” in south-east Ukraine which could end the Geneva talks that were designed to defuse the crisis.
Officials and even local residents have confirmed that the flight began at 4am. Ukrainian troops could be seen in armoured personnel carriers in a southern suburb of Slavyansk.
