The pontiff, who is 85, said his strength was no longer adequate due to his
advance age "I have to recognise my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry."
Pope Benedict will retire on 28th February and will be the first pope to stand down since Gregory XII in 1415. His resignation was announced in Latin at a meeting of the Vatican cardinals on Monday morning.
