Plymouth Gigabit FTTP

Plymouth moves a step closer to having access to one gigabit per second internet connection.

Plymouth City Council is currently searching for a contractor to install “Fibre To The Premises” that will provide one gigabit per second internet connection to around 200 public buildings, GP surgeries and hospitals around the city. The announcement follows a £3million grant from the government in March.

The scheme will make it easier and cheaper for homes and businesses in the city to have access to faster and reliable internet connection that uses fibre optic cables instead of copper wires. The former allows internet download speeds that is 20 times faster than the current average broadband speed.

Tudor Evans, the city council’s Labour leader said: “The project is a real step forward for the city and neighbouring rural districts.

“One area where we expect this bid to make a difference is in helping us to tackle the serious pressures on our public services, for example by offering more patients online GP consultations or testing some of the amazing new technologies that are being developed for remote health checks and monitoring.

“We also want businesses to benefit from access to full fibre so that they can compete in global markets – and we’re excited about the prospect of better 5G mobile coverage.
