Philippines signs law requiring free Internet access in public spaces and government offices.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has signed Republic Act 10929 that requires free Internet access in public spaces and government offices.
The Google Developers Group (GDG) in Cebu welcomed the new law, noting that this will allow more convenient access to digital information soon for everyone.
“It is promising and we are looking forward on the implementation. Crafting the law is one but implementing it is what really matters to us, Filipinos,” said Shad Roi, GDG Cebu community manager.
“Once free internet access in public spaces and government offices is implemented, more opportunity will be made available for us. With free internet access, connecting with others through social media, studying, looking for jobs or working online and doing business transactions would be much easier. More importantly, we could now have easy access to online government services and to documents we could use for our research or education,” Roi added.
Cebu IT-BPM Organization (CIB.O) managing director Wilfredo Sa-a Jr. added: “With this infrastructure in place, we hope there will be online government services available. And people should also realize that the Internet is more than just Facebook. The Internet is an unlimited source of information for practically everything that we need to know. We should learn to use that information to our advantage and for the common good,”
