Equini Limited, a multinational technology and payments specialist, has been chosen by Ofcom for its PMSE programme and would be responsible for compensating current users of the 700MHz spectrum band, ahead of it being freed up for use with 5G.
700MHz band, which is currently being used for programme making digital terrestrial television, will no longer be accessible starting 1 May 2020 as it will be repurposed for use with mobile networks.
Gavin Lane, Senior Director at Equiniti, said: “We are delighted to have won this contract and look forward to working in collaboration with Ofcom again having managed a similar project for them nearly a decade ago.”
Ofcom is set to auction 700MHz spectrum and networks that plan to deploy 5G are expected to bid, just as previously when the 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz networks were auctioned. Winning bidders have the potential to drastically improve mobile coverage in rural areas and in UK regions other than England.
