Free WiFi Shelter in Stockton

A free WiFi shelter where youngsters can congregate may solve anti-social behaviour around shops, a councilor has claimed.

Councillor Di Hewitt said that Stockton Council’s move to deter anti-social behaviour by installing four new floodlights and a new CCTV camera at the multi-use games (MUGA) off the Black Path in Tilery can be complemented by a WiFi shelter.

 

She explains: “It’s like a bus shelter but with WiFi.”

 

"It's a proposal we want to move forward because part of the problem with young people and where they congregate is they tend to congregate near Wi-Fi."

 

She said that KFC was one such hotspot for congregating youths in the town making use of free WiFi. Although not a problem in itself but it could be intimidating for some.

 

Cllr Hewitt said: "This shelter would provide for young people and would offer some security in and around that."

 

Cllr Hewitt tackling anti-social behaviour problems in the area requires more action. 

 

"We have a huge problem with quad-bikes and stolen motorbikes and we're going to do some work to limit how fast they go down streets where kids might be playing," she said.

 

"It's a problem everywhere and we cannot allow that to happen - the CCTV and lighting is part of that really."
