84-year-old nun sister Megan Rice has been jailed for three years after she, along with two men, broke into a high-security plant by cutting through three fences in order to splatter human blood on the building.
The incident, which took place on July 28th 2012, has embarrassed officials of Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee which plays a crucial role in making, maintaining, and dismantling parts of every weapon in the US nuclear arsenal.
The other two activists, Greg Boertje-Obed and Michael Walli, received sentences of more than five years.
Last May, a jury decided that the trio were all guilty of interfering with national security and a second charge of damaging federal property.
Rice did not show remorse after the sentence was read. She said: "Please have no leniency with me. To remain in prison for the rest of my life would be the greatest gift you could give me.”
