Around midnight on Monday, a fire started at Norfolk fire station, which is believed to have been aggravated by exploding breathing apparatus. Dozens of local fire fighters were called to the retained fire station and many nearby homes had to be evacuated.
A spokesman for Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service said that investigation is underway to establish the cause.
The spokesman also said that fire cover in the Downham Market area will be maintained with immediate effect from relief crews.
According to reports, it will cost the government £1.5m to replace it.
Councillor Mellish who lives opposite the station told a local newspaper: "At 12.10am something woke me up and the next explosion was almost immediately after and I thought the police station was under attack. I could not believe it when I opened the window and saw the fire station red raw alight. The bangs were phenomenal and frightening.”
