Shameless creator Paul Abbott has confirmed that there will be no season 12 for the long-running Channel 4 drama series. This is certainly bad news for millions of people who have followed the TV series since its inception.
“Its 10th anniversary seems a fitting time to shut the book,” creator Paul Abbott told the BBC, adding that the death of his father had influenced the decision.
Season 11 is currently filming in Manchester and is set to be broadcast early next year. Fans can expect 14 more episodes before the curtain falls down for the said show.
“We've had an absolute ball making this stuff up for a living,” said Abbott in a statement. “We've given back in spades and got away with absolute murder.”
Shameless, an award-wining show with an American version, is loosely inspired by Abbott’s childhood in Burnley. It follows the dysfunctional family of a single father, played by Actor David Threlfall, and his six children who learned how to take care of themselves as he spends most of his days drunk.
“Shameless, ground-breaking when it launched and gob-smacking ever since, has over the years built a loyal following,” said Jay Hunt, Channel 4's chief creative officer, in a BBC report.
“We are in Paul Abbott's debt for bringing his defiantly dysfunctional band of characters to Channel 4.”
