Disney finally announces it very own streaming service.
16:01 01 May 2019
Disney is preparing to launch its own streaming service, which is expected to become available in North America by November. The highly anticipated service will bundle together some of the firm’s major franchises, including Marvel, the work of Pixar, Star Wars and the National Geographic. It will also include the first 30 seasons of The Simpsons, after Disney spent $70billion on 20th Century Fox. Disney also owns sports network ESPN, Hulu and India’s Hotstar, which currently has 300million subscribers.
The company is in the process of getting back the rights to its content, which it sold to other streaming platforms before it had platform aspirations of its own. The firm has confirmed that it could take as long as four years before all the deals have expired.
Aside from Disney, Apple has also recently joined the online streaming industry through the launch of its Apple TV+service, which will feature exclusive content created by Oprah and friends.
