Newquay has partnered with Devon and Cornwall Police to install a new CCTV system that aims to fight drug-related crime in the area. Once installed, it will be used to monitor the Higher Tower Road, Pentire Road, the Gannel Link Road and Mount Wise areas. The move to install a CCTV comes after a survey found that it can improve safety and security in the said areas.
Inspector Dave Meredith, from Newquay Police, said: “This is a great result for the police and the community, and will provide the last ‘link’ in CCTV coverage around the town centre area.
“Higher Tower Road has traditionally had issues of crime and anti-social behaviour linked to Class A drug supply and use.
“A CCTV camera located in this area will have a real impact on criminality in the area. Vehicles entering or leaving Newquay Town centre via Mount Wise, Pentire Road, and the Gannel Link Road can also be viewed by this camera.
“Over recent years Newquay’s CCTV system has had a real positive impact on the prevention and detection of crime.
“I am very pleased to see the further enhancement of our CCTV system with this new camera".
Deputy mayor of Newquay Andy Hannan said: “Newquay Town Council are committed to supporting our local police by providing a first-class CCTV system for the town that is state of the art and manned by our excellent CCTV monitoring staff here in Newquay.
“This contribution, by the police, has enabled us to expand the coverage of the system which has always been our intention.
“The new camera will link in with the existing ones to provide continuous coverage throughout the Higher Tower Road and Mount Wise areas.
“We are fully committed to making our Town a safer place for our residents and visitors to live in and visit".
