Plymouth City Council has confirmed a number of measures that the local government will take to counter increasing fears of people as they go about their daily business around the city.
The latest initiative will see improved street lighting, the installation of new CCTV cameras, and the launch of 'help points or standalone emergency points in key parts of the city. Council leaders confirmed that they will order the necessary equipment ASAP and that work will start onsite early next year.
The announcement follows the horrific death of 18-year-old Bobbi Anne McLeod, whose body was found by police at woodland in Bovisand.
The scheme is fully funded by the Home Office, which strategically targets violence against women and girls and aims to improve feelings of safety by strengthening the local environment to improve safe passage, targeted prevention activity, and helping the community to develop their own solutions, reclaim community spaces and improve guardianship.
Council Leader Nick Kelly said: "I know a lot people will be reassured by this news. We need to make sure everybody but especially women and girls feel safe when they walk around our streets. We know physical improvements in and around our city is not the only answer – but it is step in the right direction.”
