NECA Applies for 5G Urban Project

North East Combined Authority (NECA) submits bid to the Government to trial new 5G technologies.

The North East Combined Authority (NECA) has applied to the Government’s £200million 5G Urban Connected Communities project to trial 5G technologies for its residents and businesses. The bid is supported by Nexus and a number of other organisations both in the public and private sectors.

 

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, which runs the scheme, is actively seeking an area for the project that will see wireless machinery built so that 5G can be tested in a major city

 

5G, the next generation mobile network, is set to be launched in the United Kingdom starting in 2020. It is believed to be the service we need to optimise Internet of Things (IoT), which will allow us to transfer information from device to device in a matter of milliseconds. It can power driverless cars and can revolutionise many industries to boost productivity, safety and efficiency, among others. It is also the key to make virtual reality more accessible. Currently, the energy to run virtual reality is almost 100 times higher than playing an HD video.
