Vodafone, which has previously confirmed 5G trial in seven cities - Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Liverpool, London and Manchester – is to expand its launch plans to include Birkenhead, Blackpool, Bournemouth, Guildford, Portsmouth, Plymouth, Reading, Southampton, Stoke-on-Trent, Newbury, Warrington and Wolverhampton. Vodafone promises speeds that are at least ten times faster than 4G.
The majority of the firm’s 4G sites are 5G-ready and is currently testing the performance of compatible smartphones, routers and processors before the big launch.
Vodafone UK CTO Scott Petty said: “Our multi-billion-pound network investment and leading position in setting global standards will ensure our customers have the very latest 5G releases and technology. 5G will also usher in a new era where everyone and everything is better connected, whether you are running a hotel in Portsmouth or broadcasting live at MediaCity in Salford.”
Aside from its highly anticipated 5G launch, Vodafone is also included in the National Beyond Visual Line of Sight Experimentation Corridor (NBEC) group, which runs test to find ways so drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) will be allowed to fly in the same airspace as manned aircraft.
