A question mark hangs over the fate of one of Coronation Street's biggest stars.

Johnny Biggs, who plays loveable rogue Mike Baldwin, has been shown the door by Corrie bosses, according to the Sun.

An insider told the paper that the news came as a "bolt from the blue" for the veteran actor.

"The message is clear - nobody has a job for life on Coronation Street," the source is quoted as saying.

Mike Baldwin has been at the heart of some of Corrie's most compelling storylines, from his affair with old rival Ken Barlow's wife to his ill-fated marriage to gold digger Linda.

Speaking on GMTV this morning Biggs dismissed the Sun's story as "ludicrous".

"I think if I'd been fired I'd be the first to hear about it," he said.

Biggs' current contract runs until 2006.
