Middlesbrough CCTV Tackles Illegal Dumping

Middlesbrough council to install 100 new CCTV cameras to tackle illegal dumping.

Middlesbrough Council is set to launch a “flying squad” alongside 100 extra CCTV cameras across the town to address the growing problem of illegal dumping.

 

The move follows thousands of complaints between last April and the start of this year. Documents show that there were 4,411 fly tipping complaints between last April and the start of this year, more than the entire 2019/20 total of 3,746 reports.

 

Cameras have already been installed in parts of Easterside, Newport, Hemlington, Berwick Hills and Pallister to give the authorities a better chance of securing convictions. 

 

Labour group leader Cllr Matt Storey said the cameras will make a "huge difference".

 

The opposition leader said: "Fly tipping continues to be a major issue around the town and these plans clearly aim to address that as people continue to wait up to 13 weeks for free bulky waste collection.

 

"Anything that can be done to speed up collections of fly tipping is a positive step.

 

"But we must ensure we do not overstretch our budget, or place too much pressure on wardens and area care staff who already do a tremendous amount of work."
