Madonna has won her appeal to adopt a second African child, the country's highest court has ruled.

The Queen of Pop appealed against a previous decision that she couldn't adopt four-year-old Malawian orphan, Chifundo "Mercy" James.

In April, Judge Esmie Chondo initially ruled out the adoption, citing residency rules, where prospective parents had to be resident in Malawi for 18 months.

However, the southern African state's chief justice, Lovemore Munlo, has now granted the adoption, praising Madonna's interest in helping Malawi orphans and said the child would have a better life with the star.

When Madonna adopted David Banda in 2006 the residency rule was waived.

The singer also has two biological children, Lourdes, aged 12, and Rocco, aged eight.
