27-year-old Luis Suarez has injured his knee in training weeks before San Paulo match against England in June 14. He is due to have keyhole surgery on Thursday to repair damage to his meniscus and might not recover in time for the game. Experts say that although his recovery can be completed in 15 days, it can drag on for four weeks. This will depend on the extent of the damage discovered during Thursday’s procedure.
In September 2012, Manchester United and England defender Phil Jones suffered the same injury and had spent a total of 10 weeks to recover.
This could be a huge blow to Suarez’s team as he is the season’s Premier League leading scorer with 31 goals. He also finished as the top-scorer in the South American section of World Cup qualifying after he scored 11 goals.
Suarez is a proven performer at major tournaments, helping Uruguay to the semi-finals of the 2010 World Cup and scoring four times as his side won the Copa America the following year.
