Live Streaming Legalities
Is live streaming video legal?
11:05 31 August 2017
Are you live streaming while you’re watching a concert or a football match? If yes, you might be on the wrong side of the law. Recording with YouTube, Firetalk or Periscope is illegal if you’re capturing copyrighted content. Under the federal copyright law, live streaming as you watch ‘The Fate of the Furious’ for example, is a big no-no. The same rule applies when live streaming a concert performance as you can potentially infringe the copyrights of multiple parties, including the publisher, the label and the artist.
League restrictions also apply while viewing a professional sporting event like an MLB baseball game or an NFL football game. Networks pay an enormous amount of money for the rights to broadcast games live and they will surely not take it lightly if you do the same with your mobile app.
