Emmerdale actress Kate McGregor reckons her character would be better off without her vet husband.

The star has pleaded with TV bosses to break up Emily Kirk's marriage to husband Paddy, played by Dominic Brunt.

Kate wants to see her character strike out on her own for once and be a strong single woman, the Daily Star reports.

"Emily's always had a man. It would be nice to see her as an independent woman," the actress told a fan magazine.

"I've been simmering along for a while as a supporting player. Now they're opening the door."

Kate's wish for a more demanding role looks set to come true as a forthcoming storyline will see Emily and Paddy's sex life hit the rocks.
