IoT Bike Lights in Manchester

IoT-enabled bike lights to improve cycling experience in Manchester.

Two innovative trials that involve the use of IoT-enabled bike lights aim to improve cycling experience in Manchester. The Synchronicity Smart Cycling Pilot, which is participated by around 400 volunteers using bike lights built and designed by See.Sense, aims to provide valuable insights on ride conditions encountered by cyclists, including chosen routes, road surface conditions and traffic hotspot areas.

 

Since the trial started, smart lights have been sending information to BT’s IoT Data Hub where it is combined with depersonalised trial data with other factors such as weather helping identify areas for improvements.

 

The smart technology helps experts better understand the roadblocks being faced by green transportation. The findings will be shared with Manchester City Council so they can analyse it and consider if, and where, improvements can be made for cyclists in the city.

 

Similar trials are currently being carried out in Antwerp, Dublin and Ipswich. The Manchester trial provides the framework for better cycling conditions and the opportunity for all involved to improve their carbon footprint. It aims to help commuters make an evidence-based decision on cycling by providing them information on popular routes, road conditions and their level of difficulty.
