Increased CCTV for Greenwich Council

Greenwich Council confirms plans to install more CCTV cameras to discourage illegal driving behaviour and increase road safety.

Greenwich Council is set to install additional CCTV cameras across the borough in June. The scheme is part of the council's efforts to reduce congestion, improve air quality and increase road safety by discouraging illegal driving behaviour. 

 

Cllr Jackie Smith, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Enforcement, said: “The introduction of CCTV cameras to the borough has been extremely successful and that’s why we’re rolling them out in more locations.

 

“Enforcing traffic contraventions in this way improves road safety and congestion and encourages safer driving, which all helps to reduce the likelihood of accidents happening.

 

“Making illegal turns and ignoring no entry signs can have serious consequences for pedestrians and other motorists, while stopping in yellow box junctions impacts journey times which can lead to congestion, delays and poor air quality.”

 

The police are also set to transfer the processing of moving traffic offences to the council so they can focus more of their resources on combatting and reducing crime in the borough. 

 

Locations for the new CCTV cameras include Plumstead Common Road/Bloomfield Road, Tunnel Avenue (North Morden Wharf Road), Thomas Street junction with Wellington Street, Plumstead High Street junction with Garribaldi Street and Rochester Way junction with Crookston Road. 

 

Warning notices will be issued for a period of two weeks in the new locations. CCTV video footage or still images of the offence will be subsequently made available for viewing online.
