Hull’s ageing CCTV network, which consists of more than 300 public surveillance cameras installed across the city more than a decade ago, could be in line for a multi-million pound digital upgrade.
The CCTV network has played a crucial role in the detection of hundreds of crimes, including assaults, criminal damage, murders and sex assaults. The cameras were also extremely useful during the devastating 2007 floods in different parts of the city.
The council leaders are now hoping to secure government funding to update the network’s analogue system.
Deputy council leader Councillor Daren Hale said: "Our ambition is for the city to have a world class digital infrastructure that will allow the public sector, business and residential users access to high speed digital services.
"This bid demonstrates our desire to be at the technological cutting edge of UK cities."
