Huawei unveils blueprint for a major new UK tech research hub just as security fears grow.

hinese firm Huawei is set to unveil its blueprint for a major new tech research hub. The move comes after US has pressured the British government to reconsider its role in the 5G network over fears that the firm’s technology will be used by Beijing to spy on people. Google has also made a move and already restricted Huawei’s new phones’ access to its Android operating system.

 

 

 

Based on documents seen by Yahoo Finance UK, Huawei is set to publish detailed construction plans for a huge new UK facility that the company will use to research and develop new chip technology that could drive up internet speeds worldwide.

 

 

 

The planned 45,000 sqm hub will be built on an area of unused shrubland by the derelict factories of the 550-acre Spicers Site, which Huawei bought last year for £37.5million.

 

 

 

However, Huawei is expected to face challenges in getting approval from local planning officials and councillors at a time of heightened controversy over its possible links to the Chinese government.

 

 

 

If the company’s plans push through, their new facility would become their third in Cambridge, expanding on the team of around 100 research and development staff it already has nearby after buying the British ‘internet of things’ firm Neul in 2014.
