Technology experts have long been encouraging people to create “smart homes” where fridges notify the owner when the milk is on the turn and ovens automatically set the temperature and cooking time for meals.
However, even though the available technologies undoubtedly bring convenience, surveys reveal that only a small part of the population is interested to take advantage.
Out of 2,500 people surveyed in the UK, Spain, Italy, France, and Germany, 63per cent said that they are not aware what exactly “smart home” was while 13per cent said they had a good understanding of an individual smart home products.
"More people are interested in learning about the smart home and are starting to purchase their first connected devices," said Adam Simon, global managing director for retail at Context.
"But there are still hurdles to overcome in terms of how retailers explain the concept to consumers, and how the wider industry markets the category."
